How to Design a Custom Clock for Laser or CNC

A clock is one of those projects that looks like a beginner build and quietly is not.

The face is easy. The failures happen in three specific places: the shaft hole is the wrong diameter, the hands do not fit the movement you bought, and the twelve markers end up glued on by eye, which means one of them is visibly wrong forever.

None of that is a skill problem. It is a measurement problem, and every measurement comes from a part you probably have not bought yet.

Short answer: buy the movement first. Its shaft diameter sets your face hole, its shaft length limits how thick your face can be, and its two hand-mounting sizes set your pivot holes. Design around those four numbers and the rest is styling.

The Movement Decides Four Things

A quartz clock movement is a small box with a threaded shaft. It costs very little and it constrains your entire design.

Shaft diameter sets the hole in the middle of your face. Too small and it will not pass through; too large and the clock sits loose and off-center.

Shaft length is the one that catches everybody. The threaded portion has to pass through your face material and still leave enough thread for the washer, the nut, and the hands. A long-shaft movement exists precisely because a thick face eats the thread. Measure your material, then buy a movement with enough shaft for it, not the other way round.

The two hand mountings. The hour hand and the minute hand do not mount the same way, and their holes are different sizes. Get these wrong and the hands either will not seat or wobble around loose.

The overall body size, if you are recessing it into the back of the face rather than surface mounting.

Buy the movement before you cut anything. Every dimension above comes off a physical part, and guessing at them is the single most common way a finished clock face becomes scrap.

Building It in ClockLab

ClockLab is a parametric clock builder: you set the parameters and it generates the cut files, rather than you drawing a clock and hoping the geometry works out. The sidebar walks through six steps in order, and the preview shows the assembled clock as you go, hands running at ten past ten.

1. Face

Pick a shape: circle, square, rounded square, octagon, or hexagon. You can also upload your own outline if you want something the presets do not cover.

Then set face size, dial diameter, and where the dial sits on the face. The dial does not have to be centered, which is how you get a face with a name or a design occupying the lower third and the working clock above it.

This is also where the shaft hole diameter goes. That is the movement measurement from earlier.

2. Border

The border is a separate ring, cut from contrasting material and laid on top of the face, with its outer edge following the face outline exactly.

Worth being clear about, because people expect an engraved ring: this is a real physical layer. It is cut, not engraved, which means it can be a different wood, a different color of acrylic, or a different finish entirely. Stacking materials is what makes a homemade clock stop looking homemade.

3. Hands

Baton or spade, or upload your own shapes. Set the hour and minute lengths, and set the pivot holes to match your movement's two mounting sizes.

There is also a pivot connector size, which is what holds the hand geometry together at the center while it is being cut.

Length matters more than it looks. A minute hand that reaches past the markers looks wrong and can physically catch on applique pieces that stand proud of the face.

4. Hour markers

Four styles: Numbers, Roman, Symbols, or Custom text. Two layouts: all twelve, or quarters with ticks between them.

The important thing about markers here is that they are separate applique pieces. You cut them from contrasting material and glue them onto the face. That is what gives a clock physical depth instead of a flat engraved dial.

You also control marker size, how far out the ring of markers sits, whether each one rotates to face the center, and the font. There are curated fonts built in, and you can upload your own.

5. Artwork

Two ways in. Upload an SVG, which is used directly, or a photo, which gets traced into engravable line art with threshold, contrast, and noise controls you can adjust. Or generate a design with AI.

Artwork is automatically kept clear of the markers and the shaft hole, so it cannot end up underneath something.

6. Export

The ZIP is the part worth knowing about in advance, because it is more than one file.

That placement guide is the answer to the crooked-marker problem. You are not eyeballing twelve pieces around a dial; you are gluing to a printed reference.

The AI Engraving Option

One paid action, and it is the interesting one. Describe a design, pick from nine art styles, and it engraves the composed clock in a single pass.

The important detail is that it decorates the whole clock as a matched set: the same design lands on the dial and on both hands, so they belong to each other rather than looking like three separate decisions. You can optionally include the border ring in the decoration too.

It costs one credit per generation. Changing the face afterwards can crop the engraving, so generate it once the geometry is settled rather than partway through.

Material Pairings That Work

The whole design language here is contrast between stacked layers.

Light face, dark markers. Birch or maple face with walnut markers is the classic, and it photographs beautifully.

Dark face, light markers. Walnut or stained face with maple or white acrylic markers. Higher contrast, more modern.

Acrylic border on wood. A ring of colored or mirrored acrylic over a wood face reads as deliberate in a way that an all-wood clock sometimes does not.

Match the marking to the process. On a laser, engraved detail is a shallow surface burn. On a CNC, it is real carved depth. Both look good; they do not look the same, so pick your artwork with the process in mind.

The Assembly Order

  1. Cut everything, including the placement guide if you are printing it.
  2. Dry fit the movement through the face hole before any glue. Confirm the shaft passes through with thread to spare.
  3. Finish the pieces separately. Oil or seal the face, border, and markers before assembly, while every surface is still reachable.
  4. Glue the border, aligning its outer edge to the face outline.
  5. Glue the markers using the placement guide, not by eye.
  6. Mount the movement, then fit the hour hand, then the minute hand, then the second hand if you have one.
  7. Check clearance by running the hands a full rotation by hand before you trust it. Anything that catches, catches every hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What clock movement do I need?

A standard quartz movement, chosen for a shaft long enough to pass through your face material with thread left over. Buy it before designing, since its shaft diameter and hand mounting sizes set holes in your file.

How thick can a clock face be?

Whatever your movement's shaft length allows, minus the washer and nut. Thick faces need a long-shaft movement, which is sold specifically for the purpose.

Why do my clock hands not fit?

The pivot holes do not match your movement's mountings. The hour and minute hands mount differently and at different sizes, so both holes have to be set from the actual part.

Measure the Movement, Then Design

Order a movement, or go find one in a drawer, and write down three numbers: shaft diameter, shaft length, and the two hand mounting sizes.

Then open ClockLab and build the face around them. The preview will show you the assembled clock as you work, which is a much better way to judge marker size and hand length than imagining it from a flat drawing.

The clock that comes out the other side will fit the movement you actually own, which is the whole trick.
