How to Prep an Image for Sublimation (Before You Waste a Blank)

The design looked perfect on your monitor. It came off the press soft around the edges, with a faint rectangle of slightly different sheen where you were sure the background was white.
Nothing went wrong at the press. It went wrong in the file, about twenty minutes earlier, and the press just did an excellent job of reproducing it at full size.
Sublimation is unusually harsh on source images. There is no layer sitting on top to hide behind and no white ink to build on, so every flaw in the file lands directly in the material. The good news is that it is always the same four things.
Resolution: Do the Arithmetic Once
The only question that matters is how many pixels you have at the size you are printing, not how big the image looks on screen.
The math is simple. Multiply your finished print dimensions by your target resolution:
- A 10 inch wide shirt print at 300 DPI needs an image 3000 pixels wide
- A 9 by 4 inch mug wrap at 300 DPI needs 2700 by 1200 pixels
- A 5 by 7 inch photo panel at 300 DPI needs 1500 by 2100 pixels
300 DPI is the common target for photo-quality printing. Somewhat lower still prints acceptably, especially on fabric where the weave hides a lot, but hard-edged artwork and text punish low resolution far more than photographs do.

That 600 pixel logo the customer emailed you is about 55 DPI stretched across an 11 inch mug wrap. Enlarging it in your design software does not add detail, it just makes the existing blur bigger. This is the single most common cause of a disappointing sublimation print.
The fix is AI upscaling, which reconstructs detail as it enlarges rather than smearing what is there. Transparency: White Is Not the Same as Nothing
Sublimation has no white ink, so a genuinely white pixel transfers as nothing at all and the blank shows through. That sounds like it makes backgrounds a non-issue. It does not.
The problem is that almost nothing is truly white. Off-white pixels carry dye. JPG compression can leave visible artifacts around hard edges, including a faint not-quite-white fringe. A quick cutout leaves a grey fringe of leftover background pixels along the outline. None of that is visible on a bright monitor, and all of it prints.
On a white blank you might get away with it. On a colored blank, or anywhere the sheen catches the light, you get a visible rectangle around your subject that looks exactly like a badly applied sticker.
Use a real transparent PNG, not a white background. PixelPrep removes the background and gives you an actual alpha channel, so there is nothing at the edges to print. If your art arrives as a JPG, that format cannot hold transparency at all, so it has to be cut out rather than converted.

Color: Never Judge It Off the Paper
Sublimation prints come out of the printer looking dull, flat, and wrong. Greens look muddy, reds look brownish, everything looks under-saturated.
That is normal. The color develops when the heat turns the dye into gas, so transfer paper routinely looks dull and shifted compared to the finished piece. Judge final color from a pressed test, not from the sheet. If a pressed result is still wrong, that is a printer, profile, or nozzle question rather than a file one.
Which leads to the rule that saves beginners weeks: never color-correct based on the printout. Every season someone brightens their file because the paper looked washed out, presses it, and gets a garish result that is now genuinely wrong.
Two practical habits instead:
Print one swatch sheet. Put your most-used colors on a single sheet, press it onto your usual blank, and keep it. That pressed sheet, not your monitor and not the paper, is your color reference from then on.
Expect the blank to change the color. The same file on white hardboard, on a slightly cream polyester shirt, and on a grey tote gives three different results, because the dye is translucent and the substrate is underneath it.
Mirroring: The One That Costs You a Blank Every Time
Sublimation prints face down against the blank, so the image transfers reversed. Anything with text, a logo, a signature, or a recognizable orientation has to be mirrored before printing.
Symmetrical designs forgive you. Everything else does not, and you find out after the press has been closed for a minute.
Build the habit of mirroring as the very last step, right before you hit print, so it is never something you did earlier and cannot remember. If your printer software has its own mirror setting, pick one place to do it and never do it in both, which flips it back.
Size to the Blank, Not to the Page
Design at the real finished dimensions. Not "roughly mug sized," the actual dimensions of the printable area on the blank you bought, which its supplier publishes.
Compose the layout at that size so what you see is what will land on the product. Working at final size also means the resolution arithmetic from earlier is checking the thing you are actually going to print, rather than a scaled preview of it.

Leave yourself margin. Blanks are not perfectly square, alignment is done by hand, and a design that reaches exactly to the printable edge will be off-center on some percentage of your presses.
The Four Checks, in Order
- Size the canvas to the blank's real printable area.
- Check resolution at that size. Upscale in PixelPrep if the arithmetic says you are short, using the right mode.
- Check transparency. Real alpha channel, no grey fringe, zoomed in at 400%.
- Mirror last, then print on the coated side of the sublimation paper.

Where Files Go Wrong
Saving artwork as JPG. It cannot hold transparency and it adds compression halos around exactly the hard edges you care about. Use PNG for anything with a cutout or crisp lines.
Upscaling in the design software. Stretching a small image just enlarges the blur. Reconstruct the detail first, then place it.
Correcting color off the paper. Covered above, and worth the repetition.
Designing at screen size. A layout built at 800 pixels wide because that filled the window is not a print file.
Mirroring twice. Once in your design file and once in the printer driver puts it right back where it started.

What DPI should a sublimation image be?
300 DPI at the finished print size is the common target. Multiply your print dimensions in inches by 300 to get the pixel dimensions you need.
Do I need a transparent background for sublimation?
For cutouts and irregular shapes it is strongly recommended. A truly white pixel transfers nothing, so in theory a white background is harmless; in practice backgrounds are rarely truly white, and real transparency is what guarantees no off-white or fringe pixels sneak through as a visible box around your subject. Keep two things separate here: transparency controls which of your pixels print, while the blank's own color still shows through everything you do print, because there is no white ink.
Why does my sublimation print look faded on the paper?
It is supposed to. The color develops when heat converts the dye to gas. Judge color from a pressed swatch, never from the printout.
Do I always have to mirror sublimation designs?
Yes for anything with text or a specific orientation, since the print transfers face down. Mirror it once, as the last step before printing.
PNG or JPG for sublimation?
PNG. It supports transparency and it does not add compression artifacts around hard edges. JPG is acceptable only for full-bleed photographs with no cutout.
Can I fix a low resolution customer photo?
Often, yes. AI upscaling reconstructs detail rather than simply enlarging pixels, and it can rescue a small logo or a phone photo for a modest print size. It can also invent detail that was never there, so inspect the result at full size before you commit it to a blank. A very small, very blurry source has hard limits.

Take the next design in your queue and do the four checks in order before you print anything: size to the blank, check the pixel math, verify the transparency at 400%, mirror last.
Then press it and keep it on the shelf. Once you have one physical example that came out exactly as intended, every future file has something honest to be compared against, which beats a monitor every time.
