Resin Jewelry for Beginners: Molds, Bezels, and Your First Three Pieces

Resin jewelry has a weird reputation problem. The finished pieces look like tiny glass sculptures, so beginners assume the skill bar must be enormous. Meanwhile the actual barrier is much dumber: you stand in front of forty nearly identical bottles labeled "crystal clear casting resin" with no idea which one belongs in a pendant, and you go home with nothing.
Here is the good news. Jewelry is arguably the easiest place to start with resin, not the hardest. The pours are tiny, so a mistake costs you a teaspoon of resin instead of a cupful. The molds are cheap. And nothing about the chemistry gets harder at small scale; there is simply less of it to get wrong.

The Two Resins, and Which One Jewelry Wants
Almost every resin jewelry project uses one of two chemistries, and picking between them is the first real decision.
Two-part epoxy resin is the classic. You measure resin and hardener at the ratio on the bottle, stir, pour, and wait. Depending on the product, demolding takes somewhere in the range of hours to a day or more, with full hardness later still. Follow your bottle, not a blog. Epoxy is self-leveling, generally the cheaper way to fill many molds at once, and it can fill thick molds, as long as the specific product is rated for the depth you are pouring.
UV resin comes ready to use from the bottle, no mixing, and hardens in minutes under a UV lamp or strong sunlight. The catch is that the light has to reach all of it, so it works best in shallow, open-faced pieces where nothing blocks the lamp. It is also noticeably more expensive per gram.

For jewelry specifically, the honest answer is that you will eventually want both. UV resin is wonderful for bezel pendants and quick repairs. Epoxy is what you fill a full mold tray with on a Sunday. If you can only buy one bottle today, buy a small kit of two-part epoxy labeled for jewelry or casting, because it does everything, just slower.

Molds vs Bezels
Every resin jewelry piece starts as one of two things: resin poured into a silicone mold, or resin poured into a metal frame called a bezel.
Silicone molds are little flexible trays in jewelry shapes: teardrops, hexagons, cabochons, ring blanks, whole earring sets. You pour, cure, and flex the piece out. A shiny mold gives you a shiny piece; a matte mold gives you a frosted piece that needs polishing or a gloss coat. Molds wear out slowly with use, and the shiny ones lose their gloss first, so treat your favorite mold gently and keep it out of the sun.
Bezels are open metal frames with a loop already attached. Some have a solid back you fill like a tiny tray. The prettier ones are open-backed: you press the bezel onto wide sticky tape, fill it, cure it, and peel the tape away, leaving resin that light passes straight through like a little stained glass window.

Start with molds because they teach you the resin itself: mixing, pouring, timing, demolding. Move to bezels for your second project, because they quietly solve the hardest beginner problem, which is attaching hardware to a slippery cured blob.
Color, Sparkle, and Things Trapped in Ice
Clear resin is the canvas. Three families of additives do almost all the work:
- Mica powders are the workhorse. A toothpick's worth turns resin pearlescent, and they swirl beautifully when you pour two colors into one mold. Cheap sample packs with lots of colors are perfect for jewelry because each piece uses so little.
- Liquid resin dyes come in transparent and opaque versions. Transparent dyes keep that glassy, gemstone look. Opaque ones make solid candy colors. Add drops one at a time; overdoing pigment can interfere with curing, and the pigment maker's stated maximum is the rule to follow.
- Glitter and foil flakes sink or float depending on their size and the thickness of your resin. Pour a thin clear layer first, let it start to thicken, then add glitter to keep it suspended in the middle instead of piled at the bottom.
Then there are inclusions, the trapped-in-ice trick that makes people pick up your pendant and squint at it: dried flowers, gold leaf, tiny shells, a scrap of sheet music, paper photos.
One rule saves most inclusion heartbreak: anything organic or paper must be completely dry, and paper should be sealed first with a thin coat of glue or UV resin. Moisture and unsealed paper cause dark blotches and clouding once the resin soaks in. Findings: Turning a Cured Blob Into Jewelry
The moment a shiny resin drop becomes a necklace is all hardware, and the hardware has a name: findings. Jump rings, earring hooks, bails, eye pins, chain. For resin work there are three ways to connect them.
Cast the hole. Many jewelry molds have a pin or channel that forms the hole for you. Zero extra work, and the hole is clean. When choosing between two similar molds, pick the one with holes built in.
Drill it. A hand drill, called a pin vise, with a small bit goes through cured resin easily. Drill slowly, back the piece with scrap wood, and start the hole with a light twist so the bit does not skate across your glossy surface. Then a screw eye or an eye pin set with a drop of glue gives you a loop.
Glue a bail. A bail is a small loop with a flat pad that glues straight onto the back of a piece. Use a strong jewelry adhesive and rough the glue spot with sandpaper first; glue holds sanded resin far better than glossy resin.
From there, assembly is ordinary jewelry making: open a jump ring by twisting sideways, never by pulling it apart into an oval, hook it through the piece and the chain or ear wire, and twist it closed. For metal color, buy findings in one finish, either silver-tone or gold-tone, so every experiment this month can share hardware. Demolding, Sanding, and the Glassy Finish
Patience first: demold when the resin maker says to, not when the surface feels dry. A piece pulled early can warp around a fingernail print forever. Flex the mold away from the piece rather than yanking the piece out of the mold.
Most pieces come out with a sharp little edge where the resin met the top of the mold, and open-back bezel pieces have a tape side that cures slightly dull. Both are quick fixes:
- Trim any thin flashing with flush cutters or a craft knife.
- Wet sand the edges and any dull faces. Dip the sandpaper in water and work through grits from coarse to very fine, roughly 400 up through 2000 or beyond. Wet sanding cuts way down on airborne dust and keeps the resin from heating up, though your resin maker's guidance on sanding protection still applies. The piece will look frosted and ruined during this stage. It is not ruined.
- Bring the shine back, one of two ways. The fast way is a thin gloss top coat: a smear of UV resin cured under the lamp, or a thin brushed coat of mixed epoxy. The purist way is polishing compound on a cloth, or a rotary tool with a felt tip on low speed, buffing until the frost turns to glass.
For your first pieces, take the top coat shortcut. Chasing a mirror polish by hand is a fine skill to learn in month two, and a compatible UV gloss coat restores the glassy look in whatever cure time its bottle specifies, usually just minutes.
Your First Three Projects, in Order
Each of these adds exactly one new skill. Resist the urge to jump to project three on day one; the flower pendant everyone wants to start with is much less frustrating as your third pour than your first.
1. A single-color mold pendant
One silicone pendant mold with a cast-in hole, epoxy resin, one color of mica. Mix slowly, scraping the sides and bottom of your cup, pour, and pop surface bubbles with a toothpick, or a quick pass of a small heat gun held above the surface if your resin's instructions allow it. Keep open flames away from silicone jewelry molds; a torch can scorch them. Cure, demold, sand the edge, add a jump ring and chain.
This project teaches the fundamentals with nothing riding on them: ratio, stirring, bubbles, demolding. It is also genuinely wearable on the first try more often than not.
2. An open-back bezel with a dried flower
Press a bezel onto packing tape on a flat surface. Thin clear layer first, cure it, then place your pressed flower with tweezers, cover with more resin, and cure again. Peel the tape, and if the tape side is dull, give it a thin gloss coat. UV resin shines here because each layer sets in minutes, so placing the flower is calm instead of a race.

3. A matched pair of earrings
Two identical mold cavities, one batch of resin, one goal: make them match. Split your mixed resin in half before adding color so both cavities get the same shade, pour them in the same session, and cure them side by side. Then drill or use cast holes, add jump rings and ear wires, and check the pair hangs the same way up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my UV resin still sticky after curing?
Usually the layer was too thick or too heavily pigmented for the light to penetrate, or the lamp is underpowered for the resin. Cure thin layers, keep pigment light, and give it longer under the lamp than feels necessary. If the surface stays sticky, re-cure the piece from every side the light can reach, and check your bottle's instructions; some makers recommend an alcohol wipe for surface residue, and only they know whether yours does.
Can I make rings and bracelets, or just pendants?
You can, with one caveat: resin bangles and rings take daily knocks that pendants and earrings never see. Start with pendants and earrings, and when you move to rings, use a resin the manufacturer rates as hard and scratch resistant once fully cured, and give it the full cure time before wearing.
Do resin pieces yellow over time?
Clear resins can yellow with UV exposure over time.
