How to Add a Custom Engraved Sign to a Wood Project

The box is glued up, sanded to 220, and wearing its first coat of oil. It looks good. And yet it looks like it could have come from anywhere, because nothing on it says who made it, who it is for, or why it exists.
An engraved sign, plaque, or maker's mark fixes that in an afternoon. A crib with the baby's name on a small brass-free wooden plaque becomes a keepsake. A bench with "Built by Grandpa, 2026" tucked under the seat becomes the bench nobody is allowed to throw out. This post is about adding that mark to something you already built, which is a different problem from building a sign as the whole project. Here, the wood is already cut, may already be wearing finish, and is possibly too big to fit in any machine. That changes every decision. Start with what the mark needs to say.
Decide What the Mark Should Say (and How Loud)
Before any design work, decide what kind of mark this is. There are really three tiers, and mixing them up is how a nice piece ends up looking like a trophy.
- A maker's mark. Small and usually hidden: your initials, a logo, a date. Bottom of the box, underside of the shelf, back rail of the crib. It is for whoever finds it in forty years.
- A dedication. A name, a date, a short line like "For Emma, from Dad." Visible but not dominant. Inside a lid is the classic spot, because it greets the owner without shouting at guests.
- A sign. The piece announces something: a family name on a coat rack, "Garden Tools" on a cabinet, a house number on a planter. This is the only tier where the engraving is meant to be read from across the room.
Write the exact wording down now, including the date format, and have someone else read it. Every maker who has engraved "Emliy" knows why this step is not optional. Wood does not have an undo button.

Engrave the Piece Directly, or Make a Separate Plaque?
This is the biggest fork in the road, and the honest answer is that the separate plaque wins more often than people expect.
Direct engraving looks integrated and permanent, and there is nothing to glue on later. But it comes with real constraints: the piece has to physically fit in or under your machine, an assembled project rarely sits flat, and one mistake marks the project itself. A crib does not fit in a laser. A workbench does not fit in anything.
A separate plaque flips all of that. You engrave a small flat blank, which is the easiest job a laser or CNC ever does, and if the first attempt goes wrong you have wasted an offcut instead of the build. Then you attach it: glued into a shallow routed recess for a flush inlaid look, or simply glued and pinned proud of the surface like a traditional presentation plaque.

The plaque also solves the contrast problem. Laser marks are dark, so they show up most predictably on light wood. On a dark project like walnut, direct engraving can land close to dark-on-dark, and only a scrap test tells you what you will actually get. A maple or basswood plaque set into that walnut lid gives you crisp contrast and a nice two-tone detail in the bargain.

Bare or lightly sealed wood is the easy case for laser marks, and finish applied afterward usually deepens the contrast, so engraving before finishing is the forgiving order. Engraving through an existing coating is finish-dependent: some take it fine, some go muddy at the edges, and some should not be lasered at all. If the piece is already finished, first get explicit laser-processing guidance from the coating's manufacturer, using its safety data sheet to identify what is in it, and only then test the look on a scrap carrying the same finish.
Design the Artwork
A mark needs artwork, and "I typed my name in a default font" is the engraving equivalent of a builder-grade doorknob. You want vector art: clean outlines and fills that a laser or CNC can follow, not a fuzzy photo.

A few design rules that matter more on wood than on screen:
- Favor thick strokes. Hairline details disappear into grain. Anything thinner than the width of the grain lines will read as noise.
- Keep text chunky at small sizes. Thin serifs and script fonts fill in or break up as letters shrink, and exactly where that happens depends on your wood, your machine, and your settings, so test the actual font on scrap before committing. Bold, simple letterforms survive small sizes best.
- Match the motif to the piece. A botanical wreath suits a keepsake box. A gear-and-banner badge suits a tool cabinet. The mark should feel like it grew out of the project.
- Leave breathing room. Size the artwork so there is a margin of empty wood around it at least as wide as the tallest letter. Cramped engraving looks like a mistake.
Get the File Into the Right Format
Your artwork is an SVG. Whether your machine wants that depends entirely on the machine, and this is where a lot of first plaque attempts stall for an evening.
Many laser and CNC programs accept SVG, some want DXF, and plenty handle both, so check what your specific software imports before you are standing at the machine. For CNC specifically, remember that the vector is only the outline. Your CAM software still decides how to carve it: a V-bit tracing the lines gives that classic carved-sign look, while a small end mill pocketing the fills gives flat-bottomed recesses you can paint-fill. For a small plaque, a 60 or 90 degree V-bit at a shallow depth is a common starting point, proven on scrap before it touches the real blank.
Placement and Sizing
Where the mark goes matters as much as what it says. Some placements that consistently work:
- Keepsake box: centered on the lid for a sign-tier mark, inside the lid for a dedication, underside for a maker's mark.
- Shelf or bench: front edge or apron for a visible sign, underside for the quiet version.
- Crib or child's furniture: the headboard or footboard panel carries a name well; a small plaque on the back rail carries the build date.
- Cutting board (the classic gift): one corner of the face, or the entire back if the board will actually be used. Engraving on the working face gets chewed up by knives.
For sizing, cut a paper rectangle the size you are considering and tape it on the piece. Step back to the distance the piece will normally be seen from. If you cannot read it, go bigger; if it is the first thing you notice, go smaller. Thirty seconds with paper beats re-making a plaque.
As a visual starting point, not a spec: a maker's mark often lands around 25 to 50 mm across, a dedication plaque on a box lid around 60 to 100 mm wide, and a sign meant to be read from across a room wants letters somewhere north of 20 mm tall. Your paper test overrides all of that, because it accounts for the actual viewing distance.
No Laser or CNC? You Still Have Options
Adding an engraved plaque does not require owning a machine, and this is exactly the situation where the separate-plaque route shines, because a small blank is easy to hand off.
- Makerspaces. Many cities have one, and a laser cutter is one of the most common machines on their floor. Details vary by space, but the usual pattern is a short orientation class, then machine time at an hourly or membership rate that costs a fraction of owning one. Staff are used to walking first-timers through their first engrave.
- Local trophy and engraving shops. They quote small one-off jobs all the time. Bringing a clean vector file instead of a napkin sketch usually makes the job cheaper, because you have done the design work already.
- Online engraving services. Upload the file, pick the wood, get the plaque in the mail, glue it on.
- A friend with a machine. Half the laser owners you know are looking for excuses to run the thing. Arriving with a ready SVG and a piece of nice scrap makes you a very easy favor.
In every case, the design and file-format steps above are identical. You do the part that makes the mark yours; someone else's machine does the burning.

Should I engrave before or after applying finish?
