Sublimation Mugs and Tumblers, Step by Step

Flat blanks are forgiving. You lay the paper down, close the press, and the whole design gets the same heat and the same pressure at the same time.

Curved blanks are not flat blanks. The paper has to wrap, which means it can slip. The pressure comes from a band squeezing a cylinder, which means it can be uneven. And the design meets itself around the back, which means there is a seam that either disappears or announces itself in every photo you take of the finished mug.

Almost every mug and tumbler failure traces back to one of four causes, and all four are avoidable: the paper moved, the paper was not in full contact, the blank was not right for the process, or the heat was wrong.

What You Need

A press made for the shape. A mug press has a curved heating element sized to a particular mug diameter. A tumbler press handles straight-walled and tapered drinkware. Some blank suppliers also publish an oven-and-wrap method, where a silicone wrap clamps the paper on and the whole thing goes into a convection oven. If you go that route, follow the blank and ink suppliers' safety instructions to the letter, including their guidance on using an oven dedicated to sublimation rather than one you cook in. A flat press cannot do this job at all.

Blanks with a coating. Sublimation mugs and tumblers are coated for the purpose. An uncoated ceramic mug from the supermarket will take the heat and give you nothing.

Heat resistant tape. Ordinary tape gives up at press temperature and lets the paper move at the worst moment.

Gloves and a heatproof surface. These blanks come out genuinely hot, and you need to move immediately once the timer ends.

Size the Wrap to the Actual Blank

Your supplier publishes a printable area for each blank. Use theirs rather than a generic template, because an 11oz mug from one supplier and an 11oz mug from another are not always the same wrap.

Two decisions matter here.

Handle gap or full wrap. Most mugs want the design to stop short of the handle on both sides. A few blanks support a genuine full wrap, but they are a specific product, not something you can force on an ordinary mug.

Where the seam lands. If your design meets itself, put that meeting point directly opposite the handle so it faces away in every product photo and away from the drinker.

Resolution matters more here than on flat work, because a mug wrap is physically large. A 9 by 4 inch wrap at 300 DPI is 2700 by 1200 pixels, so build wraps in a desktop editor rather than a browser canvas with a smaller ceiling. The Press, Step by Step

  1. Mirror the design and print it on the coated side of your sublimation paper.
  2. Trim close to the design. Excess paper flapping around the blank is what shifts during handling.
  3. Clean the blank. A lint free cloth, or a wipe of isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry. Fingerprints and dust both transfer.
  4. Position the paper with the design where you want it and the seam opposite the handle.
  5. Tape it tight. Pull the paper snug against the surface as you tape so there are no bubbles or lifted areas anywhere. Any spot where paper is not touching the blank is a spot that will come out pale.
  6. Preheat the press to your supplier's temperature and load the blank.
  7. Press for the stated time. Ceramic mugs commonly sit somewhere in the range of 360 to 400°F for roughly three to five minutes, but presses vary enormously and your supplier's number beats any range on a blog.
  8. Remove it immediately when the timer ends, wearing gloves.
  9. Peel the paper straight away, unless your supplier says otherwise. Leaving hot paper sitting on a hot blank is one way to get a blurred edge.
  10. Cool it the way your supplier says. Some publish a controlled cooling step using warm water or a cooling plate; others simply let the blank cool in air. What is consistently a bad idea is cold water or any abrupt temperature change, because thermal shock cracks ceramic and can craze the coating.

Avertissement

Do not stack freshly pressed mugs or set them down on a cold surface. Uneven cooling is a real cause of cracked ceramic, and it happens minutes after a press that looked perfect.

Tumblers Have Their Own Problems

Tumblers are stainless steel, usually tapered, and often double walled. Each of those adds a wrinkle.

The taper. A straight rectangle of paper wrapped around a cone does not lie flat. Tapered tumblers need artwork shaped for the taper, which your blank supplier normally provides as a template. Wrapping a rectangle onto a tapered blank is what produces a design that visibly climbs uphill.

Double walls. They insulate, which is the point of the product and an obstacle to the process. Tumbler settings vary a lot by blank, press, and method, far more than they vary by material alone, so there is no useful rule of thumb here. Use the exact instructions that came with your blanks.

The lip and the base. Both curve away from the press. Designs that run right to the top or bottom edge tend to fade out there. Leave margin.

Conseil

Wrap tape all the way around the tumbler at both the top and bottom edges of the paper, not just at the seam. The edges are where lifting starts, and lifted paper is exactly where the faded band comes from.

Two of those deserve emphasis, because they account for most of it. Ghosting is always movement, so the answer is always more tape and less loose paper. A faded band is almost always contact, so the answer is pulling the paper tighter rather than turning anything up.

Selling Them

Mugs and tumblers are among the most reliable personalized gifts, and they photograph well, which matters more than most makers expect in a category this crowded.

Two things worth doing:

Photograph the seam side deliberately. If your design meets itself cleanly, show it. Buyers who have been burned by cheap print-on-demand mugs are specifically looking for whether the design wraps properly.

Say what it survives. Coated sublimation blanks are generally rated dishwasher and microwave safe by their manufacturers, but this varies by blank, so quote your supplier rather than guessing. It is one of the first questions buyers ask.

Do tumblers need different settings than mugs?

Yes, and they vary widely by blank, press, and method rather than following one rule, so use your supplier's exact figures. Tapered tumblers also need artwork shaped for the taper rather than a plain rectangle.

Can I use an oven instead of a press?

Some blank suppliers publish an oven method using silicone wraps that clamp the paper to the blank. Follow their instructions specifically, since it is their coating and their tested process.

Press one at your supplier's stated settings, and pay attention to only two things when it comes out: is there a pale band anywhere, and is the seam clean. Those two answers tell you whether your taping is tight enough and whether your artwork is sized right, which is most of this process.
